A former church: S. Maria da Feet

Leaving the Castle of Crecchio, the day before yesterday, we headed on foot to the former church of S. Maria da Feet (1581) in the medieval village. Very nice the streets.

Why is it called “From Feet”? Because that was the northeastern part of the country in the historic center. In fact, the church at the back overlooking a sheer drop of a forest.

Now I read:

After the ravages of the war greek-Gothic (535-553 d.C.), many villages were abandoned and the inhabitants settled in the hill where is the current center. In an era of invasions and raids it was the best place defensible, thanks to the two deep valleys dell'Arielli and Rifago. According to tradition, the site already housed at the time of a pagan temple (the site of S. Maria da Feet) ed un Fortilizio romano.

That is not a place where there was actually a time pay? That does not comfort me!

Crecchio - Wikipedia

Scipione Paternò, 1633, He writes:

Land adjoining it a shot crossbow is a source of water with perfect preserves factory where you seize the water for drinking, but to use the wash are in the valley. It is based and governs this earth predicted by dui mayors et one Mastrogiurato dalli which together we consider good governance et land management [...]. Et amid the aforementioned land is the public square in the middle of which is the mother church founded under the name of the Holy Saviour where dui priests including the archpriest [...]. There is more that another church “St. Mary's Feet” iusta them walls of earth where it is celebrated et living on alms.

It seems that, before Christianity, this church arose a place of pagan worship and not to be used for worship, but as a place of alms.

Today the church is an auditorium where there are exhibitions of documentary materials of World War II.

Now, dropping prejudices, we were very fascinated by the medieval structure in brick, It is very simple and with an old bell tower on the back and a cross. Side also has parking for cars. It has a nave as seen from the structure, and it is certainly the largest hall of the castle. We could not get because it takes appointment to visit the inside, but I peeked through the side window and I saw that everything inside is in rough brick with small windows on high. He loved, and if they will be decked out as it should, and attention to detail, It will be a beautiful place to celebrate a typical medieval Protestant church wedding.
